Get over it

When we post our photos online, inevitably someone will offer feedback.

“Nice photo”
“This photo stinks”
“Beautiful shot”
“Nice pic”
“Why would you have shot it this way”

If you are looking for feedback, your goal is to receive a 50/50 mix
of positive and negative reviews. It seems to me that people strive
for a 100% positive response with their photos. A 100% positive
response is the first indication that you are producing mediocre work,
and your photographic goals are askew.

Photographers are notoriously sensitive and take constructive
criticism very badly. If you are one of these types, then you need to
give yourself a smack across the head and wake up.

The goal as an artist should be to discover and exploit your
individual vision. This is completely different than pleasing
everyone. If your goal is to please everyone, become a politician
(good luck!). If you set out with the goal to please everyone, then
you are not investing time on your individual vision.

You’re not growing as a person when trying to please everyone because
you no longer value your own best interests, they are replaced with
the best interests of someone else. This is no way to go about life.
